1. Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a method and apparatus for increasing the surface area of a hot-rolled product, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for roughening a hot-rolled product.
2. Description of the Related Art
Austenitic stainless steel sheet products are typically formed by hot-rolling a stainless steel sheet, which is typically a stainless steel coil, to a predetermined thickness. After hot rolling, the sheet product is typically annealed to give the sheet product its desired physical properties and to increase the surface area of the sheet product for subsequent formation of a coating. For example, the steel sheet product may be annealed at a temperature in the range of about 1250.degree. C. to about 1450.degree. C. to increase the surface area of the sheet product for subsequent formation of a coating. Subsequent to annealing, the sheet product is typically coated by vacuum deposition, electrolytic deposition, chemical vapor deposition or other known methods, to impart the sheet product with corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and other desirable properties.
During hot rolling of the stainless steel sheet, a lubricating oil is applied to the surface of the sheet to provide lubrication between the metal rolling surfaces and prevent damage to the rolling surfaces. This lubricating oil remains on the surface of the sheet, typically forming a continuous coating on the sheet surface, which may interfere with subsequent coating formation. Further, the lubricating oil may cause the sheet to form a non-uniform surface, making it difficult to form a uniform coating on the sheet. Additionally, for certain applications, the lubricating oil may undesirably coat other surfaces of the sheet, such as the rollers of the rolling machine, the surface of the annealing furnace, and the like. The presence of the lubricating oil on the sheet may interfere with the subsequent coating formation, and thus, in certain cases, reduce the effectiveness of the coating.
A drawback to known methods of annealing and coating a hot-rolled stainless steel sheet product is that the resultant sheet product may have a rough surface, which may make the product unsuitable for certain applications. To reduce the roughness of the sheet be359ba680
